Spikes & Safety Pins and still more fashion than punk

I am utterly intrigued by the clever use of safety pins on this coat. I assume it's a DIY but perhaps it came that way. Ditto the spikes on the bag. She's like the quirky goth niece of Lynn Yaeger.
*and mini-update: I've been made aware that Lady Gaga modified a Birkin bag with spikes....so perhaps this is copying that? Or maybe she's as ignorant of the minutiae of pop culture as I am and came up with it herself... 

Cool Couple

"Cool" isn't really adequate a description. But chic seems more fussy and any versions of the f word (fashionable fashionistas etc) are so overused to lose all meaning. So we'll settle for cool unless someone offers up a better suggestion...anyways they work together without looking planned and appear unusually serene for the tent scene...
Anyways they're Brittany Pham & Shawn Kaleka and they're west coasters visiting the east which might explain the more laidback vibe.

You know that Fashion Week is around the corner. And if you're like me, you are already wondering what you're going to wear. (hopefully I am not the only one already thinking about it!) While there are plenty of women attending shows in sky high heels and small dresses I have to be comfortable because I'm there all day shooting the looks of those attending the shows when I'm not at a show myself. I think something like this from EVA New York would totally work – and I love the oversized bag to keep my camera and everything else in.

One from the vault

So I didn't post yesterday and today is normally one of my self-portraits. But, I have been on the road for the past 2 days driving down to Palm Beach, Florida for what I like to call my personal spa. Basically it's where I spend the holidays and relax and recoup before prepping for...yes, the next Fashion Week. The February fashion week has really been on my mind as of late because I'm looking for interns and I just received my credentials for the tents. So I thought I'd put up a photo of this girl from September about to go to a show: I love a plaid skirt that doesn't evoke thoughts of my Catholic school and I think it's great how she paired it with a simple t-shirt.

I almost prefer the look from the back! Love the chunky heel, teddy bear backpack and especially the gun/headband! And her puffy shorts are positively cheeky. ;)

Change of Season

Today was the first truly Autumnal day in NYC. The air was crisp and the light was sharp and angular in a way that it never is in the summer. I had mixed feelings from excitement to be able to wear my fall clothes to a tingle of fear in anticipation of the more frigid winter weather post fall....so in the meantime I'm going to try and enjoy it! I love this girl, Kate's whole look but I'm especially coveting her blue/black Miu Miu bag.

The Quirky Fashion Blogger: A new breed at NYFW

Fashion week tends to have a predictable cast of characters. The briskly walking and tightly wound PR girls, the Dandies in spats or bow ties, avant-gardists in Comme des Garcons or Rick Owens, loyal clients in one designer head to toe, and the outsiders who stand on the wrong side of the velvet ropes patiently waiting for a glimpse of their favorite celebrity. Although they have been around for a few seasons I would like to introduce to you the "Quirky Fashion Blogger". Her role model is Tavi or Susie Bubble, she dresses like a little girl playing with high fashion and would ace the SAT if the history of fashion was a topic. I thought these two were perfect specimens of this new breed. Both of them slightly odd and very sweet, one carried a matching doll and the other had an agent in tow.(which kind of amounts to the same thing)

Skirts and Tails

Whether they are going to become the norm on the runway it's too soon to tell, but I'm definitely seeing more boys in skirts than I have in the past. This one is rocking a traditional looking tartan with his unlaced black boots fringed bag and fur tail.

And he is also wearing a skirt –but of the minimal black variation– with similar boots and tail. Where did they get the style memo? Particularly since they are from opposite coasts as the one in the black is visiting from LA. While I truthfully don't get the fur tail thing –which I'm seeing everywhere at the moment– I totally applaud boys having fun with fashion and stepping outside of the norm.

NYFW: Women in Black

The incomparable Ms. Sophia Lamar always turns it out, so why would fashion week be any different? The brilliant leggings are by Agamic and I love the bubble shorts and floppy bowtie and Ray Bans.


This girl, Cecilia, spoke english with a bit of an accent but informed me that her t-shirt is Prada, the leggings Max Mara, shoes from Top Shop and bag by Balenciaga. And really, what more do we need to know?

NYFW style trend -black & red

We all know that black is big with people in fashion and New Yorkers, so it's nice to see a bit of red adding a jolt of color. 

So Chic, Malik

I've been in and out a bit this summer so I haven't seen "the usual suspects" as frequently as during the rest of the year. So it was lovely to run into Malik so Chic last night for the Citta event. He was appropriately attired in a vintage coat from India.

2 girls and a hat

I had a shite day so I'm keeping this brief. Love these girls –especially the hat, clutch and shoes of the one on the right!

Rockin' it at the Hudson Hotel

Last night a rock and roll party at the Ian Schrager/Philippe Starck designed midtown hotel had a decidedly downtown vibe. Tucked away in the conservative Library, lower east-siders wore their requisite black and played pool while baffled business men looked on. Janinamarie literally wore her heart on her sleeve in the form of an over-sized red suede bag. I love the whimsical nature of her whole look and she carried it off with confidence.

Two Fabulous

This is Ano and Monica and I took their pictures over the weekend when NYC was sweltering in nonstop humidity. And still they managed to have style while staying cool...and did you notice they're both wearing hats? OMG I am obsessed!

Oh you beautiful boy

This creature is chic chic chic. When I first took the photo I honestly thought it was a girl. And only later upon review realized that was not the case. And this is not the first time this has happened! I love the fluidity of gender with these gamine like boys. And the handbag is brilliant as well... now where are the girls being mistaken for boys who look as equally fabulous? I think I'll have to go find them...

3 way cool

Honestly there is nothing particular that stands out as an item of clothing in this photo. Rather it's the way they seem to be wearing "just any old thing" without looking boring that makes them all good...and together even better!

street style ny

I don't have alot to say about these two. I just thought they had good style. Not in a "I'm trying hard to look like I'm not trying hard" kind of way but the kind of style that comes from genuine self assurance that you don't see alot of in NYC but never in LA. And I love the suspenders...

Manhattan Girls

Okay, maybe they all actually live elsewhere, but I do find a certain aesthetic in Manhattan that is distinctly different than Brooklyn. It is personified by more shine, higher heels and signature bags. And black. Lots of it (although the BK does black too).

I lied

when I posted last night with the title "last fur"...I'm kind of obsessed at the moment. But don't worry, it won't last...anyways, this photo was taken during fashion week by Adomako Amankwah who helped me capture all the different looks in the tents. I'm not convinced by the Doc Martens with the coat but you can tell by the look in her eyes that she believes in it -and thus owns the look. Which to me goes a long way towards having great personal style.

Ladylike Sonia Li style

Mad Men (which I am not a fan of) has made ladylike dressing more popular again. Which can be a refreshing change from the blue jean shorts and shredded tights trend. Especially when it's done like my dear friend Sonia Li. The cut of this dress is modest but the animal print makes it edgy. And then she accessorized it with a teal snakeskin belt with a gold cat buckle, and a 60s style handbag decorated with...Tori Spelling!?!
