New York Nightlife Style - Crazy Colorful

Anyone who thinks that style = expensive hasn't been out in the city. You may hate his style (which I happen to love) but have to give him props for creativity and fearless use of color.

And a little closer detail of makeup - shown with friends.

Polaroids at Avenue NYC from party by @greggorNYC

Not a typical post, I'm well aware...but last Tuesday night after the Zink Magazine event I stopped by Avenue where my friend Greggor was having a party and shot some 'polaroids' - which aren't actually polaroids but a purposely random style instead of framing each shot...which is challenging by that point in the night as it is! The girl here is Kiss and I think she has great style that you can see even without seeing the whole image...so there you have it!

Street Style NYC @ Good Units

_DSC0009
This is one from the archive: from a party at Good Units. I love this club below the Hudson Hotel and it's supercool vibe. The best part is that there is NO Cellphone reception so people have to deal with their insecurities and just talk to strangers instead of masking it in self-important texting and chatting. I wish cells were banned from nightlife with the exception of tracking down friends. And if you had friends as fun and stylish as these two you wouldn't be looking for more elsewhere!

Ladyfag @ Maison Martin Margiela

ladyfag

I saw the fierce and fabulous Ladyfag at the fragrance launch party at Maison Martin Margiela. I love this woman. She has amazing energy and always surprising style. Here she's a study of beige and black...now all she needs are some MMM shades to truly complete the look. Anyone want to give her a discount?

Nothing like a neutral tone to complement the theatrics...of the outfit and the evening.

patricia field's party

patField
A party goer wearing, naturally, Patricia Field clothing from the Patricia Field salutes Sprouse collection with the lovely Mr. Michel Viau. I was slightly horrified when Adomako told me that he loved Patricia Field because of her work with Sex and the City. Not to say that her work for the show was anything less than inspired -and inspired many Carrie wannabes that Jessica Parker could not have created alone, but I've always thought of the House of Field as the place for club kids to complete their looks. And so associated her with the subversiveness and rebellion of an underground scene while SATC is frosted cupcakes and kowtowing to the ruling class. But whatever your associations, Ms. Field and her house is brilliant.

Deedee Luxe is delightful

_DSC0437
This shot is from a series I took at Bon Bon. A club night in NYC that is rumored to be going under because there aren't enough bottles sold. (and for those who don't know: somewhere in the last 10 years NYC clubs started charging outrageous amounts of money to buy a bottle of alcohol and be "allowed" to sit at a table. It's a ridiculous practice and made a more "those who can pay can play" vibe with rich bankers hanging out instead of more authentically creative people.) Anyways, the girl on the left is burlesque performer DeeDee Luxe and I think both of them have it going on NYC-style.

Okay, so you might recognize the girl on the right from my trend piece about a week ago. But I think these 2 together are really cute as well.

The New York Times just found out what we already knew...

3crazies
So on the front page and deep inside the Thursday Styles section of the New York Times are photos of friends that I featured in the Bon Bon video that I put up a few days ago. The article states that people are dressing up more to go out in a way that they haven't since (gasp) the Eighties! Not that it wasn't a cute article but...isn't this what I've been saying and showing for the past year and more? Where's my New York Times by-line? Well here's 3 more bits of NYC nightlife eye-candy. Yummy and no calories.

Bon Bon Catwalk - Preview Edition

Okay, not a regular post but this is a mini-movie of a longer movie I'm in the process of making -all from still photos taken at Vandam and Greenhouse. After fashion week I realized here is where I see the best fashion and style. Starring Kenny Kenny, Amanda Lepore, Jordan Fox, Malik so Chic, Ladyfag and more.

My Fashion Week Thoughts

Mostly people write about the shows and I'll be doing that as well but here are a few other observations on the week.
1. Despite the prevalence of black, neon is coming back. Particularly hot pink and acid yellow/green.
pinkYellowTrend
Here are 3 looks from the parties and as we all know, fashion gets its cues from the street.

pinkRichieRich
From the runway at the Richie Rich show. The clothes are black and white but neon was in the styling.

2. Shaved sides are big. So get out your razor already!

See what I'm talking about?

Imitation on the runway of Park Choon Moo

shavedM2
Again at the Christian Siriano show.

3. Children ran rampant this fashion week.
kids

So fashionable, so precious, so annoying. Did you hear about the 5 year old blogger? The fashion world is showing their insecurity by pandering to children and frankly it's ridiculous. Me, I am not overly fond of children. Period. And unless they have a paycheck and the stature for the clothes I fail to see why they are everywhere. Shoo! shoo! little people!

4. It doesn't matter how bad your clothes are if you can get Pamela Anderson on your runway.
pamAnderson
After an interminable wait (to the point that the photographers in the pit started booing) and ultimate disorganization the Richie Rich show finally began. And overall it was a joke. However when I Googled his show the next day to see if others agreed with me all that came up was Pam, Pam, Pam. So if nothing else I have to give this former club kid props for knowing what to show to get the press...and it has nothing to do with clothes.

Because The Blonds-and their friends- have more Fun!

blonds2
Last night I was one of the fortunate few who was able to attend The Blonds show. If you're not familiar with them (shame on you! ;)) Phillipe and David Blond have created some of the looks worn by the likes of Britney Spears and Rihanna in performance. They are determinedly over-the-top in their aesthetic and, while I'm as much a fan of deconstructed black as the next New Yorker, their colorful edgy glamour mixed with a good dose of humor (love this "lion" coat)has brought a much needed relief from the earnest seriousness elsewhere.

This dress and the spiky multiple rings are great examples of their combination this season of sexiness with a dangerous quality. I will definitely be adding more photos from the show but wanted to give you a preview today.

And with these designers you can expect a theatrical crowd. Along with some of my nightlife favorites that you've seen on Style Defined such as Malik so Chic and Jordan Fox there was J. Alexander (aka "Miss J" by ANTM fans) playing around with a gorgeous friend. The lace detailing on her dress is divine.

And I love the multi-colored polish and jems on his fingers...his own rainbow in the palm of his hand.

Fine Looking Fellows

_DSC0003
Fashion Week brings out the best dressed of both sexes...here is the infamous dandy Patrick McDonald who has recently dipped his toe into reality TV land with friends. I imagine his actual reality is far more interesting than any television show could reveal.

Keith Haring Foundation/Patricia Field/Susanne Bartsch Party

_DSC0103
Last night was the first great party of Fashion Week held at the new club in the basement of the Hudson Hotel. And if anyone doubts that 2010 is the new 1983 they only needed to attend this soiree to get the memo. The usual suspects of nightlife frivolity were there and many were decked out in homage to Keith Haring. I'll post more photos soon but have to run now to make it to the Christian Siriano show. xoxo

the face as the new accessory

BirdyDots

Last night I stopped by the Hudson Hotel to take photos of some of my favorite club kids for an upcoming video. This is Jackie Birdy and I adore how she has added dots to her face to match her dress. Super crazy and creative.

It's Jordan Fox, vandamit!

jordanFox
I'm having cabin fever due to the dreary rainy day so I'm going to make my night more exciting by going to Vandam tonight where the fierce Jordan Fox -front and center here- will be performing. Performing godonlyknows what but whatever it is, it should be a fun night.

Super Cute in Black and White

_DSC0063-copy
I love these two: one in all black and one in all white. And then the details: red suspenders and big hoop earrings on her and a jaunty cap, colorful Nikes and a Kewpie Doll necklace on him = fresh + adorable.

Party for Chris Lee Sauve hosted by Malik so Chic and Ladyfag

ChristopherLeeSauve+MalikSoChic
Christopher Lee Sauve and Malik So Chic

Last night Malik So Chic and Ladyfag hosted a party at the Union Square Lounge for Christopher Lee Suave, the very clever boy behind the Save Anna t-shirt. He has now launched a new line of t-shirts equally clever and we'll be profiling him next week right here in the Musings Section.

katyaMoorman
Me in my "Save Anna" t-shirt.
If you don't know anything about this t-shirt it was in response to the rumors that Carine Roitfeld of French Vogue was going to be taking over American Vogue...a rumor which has so far come to nothing. Personally I think Anna or no Anna, I do not want Ms. Roitfeld running American Vogue. I am not a huge fan of French Vogue and their tired collage-style spreads and believe people are suckered by Carine's personal style (no pants and excessive eyeliner) into thinking she would be good for NYC. The answer is no. Not now. Not ever.

Broadway Baby

_DSC0015-Edit-copy
This gypsy has escaped from the west side and came downtown for the evening. I love her headscarf and hope this becomes a trend for spring/summer. Such an easy and economical way to change your look!

model couple

_DSC0017-copy
Okay my backstory on these two: she spent the night at his place and threw one of his sweaters on as a dress and borrowed a belt as well...fictions aside they are indeed a stylish couple. I especially love her red bag and his multi-buckled boots.
