Ruffles can be a bit dangerous...they have a tendency to look too precious or girly on anyone over the age of 11. Instinctively 12 - 14 year olds -and 10/11 year olds in NYC- won't touch them for fear of looking...well, their age. But once you're legal to enter a bar they can sometimes hold a fascination. Here is an example of where there are alot of ruffles but they don't overwhelm or undermine the wearer. It also helps that the dress is a neutral color paired with black and a beautiful brocade coat clearly made for grown ups...such is the balancing act of style.
