Seen at RETNA presented by Vladimir Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida

Last Thursday night (has it already been almost a week?) there was an opening in Tribeca of LA grafitti artist RETNA that looked like it was out of a film about Soho in the Eighties. The space was dark and cavernous and full of people that were both very stylish and somehow distinctly New York. The coat on the right caught my eye in a black sea and the graphic energy seemed to match the artwork. It also seems to be part of the new looser, graphic trend emerging that I'm calling boho chic. The girl on the left is also on trend with the fashion crowd in her over the knee platform boots. Something I've seen ALOT of in the tents: maybe because other than fashion week you might get mistaken as a hooker?

Pretty in Patterns

I love when someone figures out how to pull off pattern on pattern. This works to me because the striped shirt is off-white so the color picks up the colors in the leopard skirt and the pinstripes on the jacket are very subtle. The other nice thing about this ensemble is the proportions of the cropped jacket with the longer top underneath -and the sleeves of the top longer than the jacket.

Colour me crazed....

I didn't take this photo, Rhea Harris did, and she is the new girl at Style Defined London, our sister site across the pond. It had a bit of a bumpy start but I'm thrilled to see it gaining momentum. As for me, I'm getting ready to photograph Fashion Week and bring it to you via Style Defined NYC and on twitter at katya_nyc. In the meantime here's a little from the UK. LOVE the pattern on pattern and flat boots. -the latter I definitely need in the coming days!

Trend alert: Shaved sides

I know I brought this up last winter but the shaved sides style has taken off and is here with a vengeance. What I hate are the girls with one side shaved and the other side long and stringy looking. It looks to me like they started copying Britney Spears head shaving fiasco and then suddenly stopped. But I do like the short on top looks on girls. Emma here is particularly adorable. Also love her shoes and Peggy Noland jacket.

Bec and Malcolm at the Shred show opening @Perry Rubenstein Gallery

Video Artists Bec Stupak and Malcolm Stuart have work in the show Shred that was curated by Carlo McCormick and is on now at the Perry Rubenstein Gallery. We love their work but their outfits at the opening were equally eye catching! Designed by Gerlan Marcel under the label Gerlan Jeans, they have hyper southern Cali colors with a New York City sensibility. A brilliant alternative to black.  And right now, Gerlan has a Kickstarter project going to raise funds for her next collection -so check it out and help Gerlan Jeans return to the Runway!

Boyz in Shorts

Girls aren't the only ones wearing shorts this summer. These two were seen at a recent Adidas event (in Keds???) I love the plaid with the camouflage and the insane skull jewelery with a matching tattoo. Now that's a commitment to a fashion statement!

Casually Cool - NY street style

This is Walt Cessna (on the left) with a friend. I love how they're so casually dressed but still have great details like Walt wearing a cross body bag (although the bag is kind of hidden here) and his friend wearing multiple patterns. The whole pattern thing can be tricky so it's great when you see it done right.

Ubercool x 2

The woman on the right is Lindsay Jones, a designer of the uber-cool line Outlaws of the Border. I don't know if either of these women are wearing that label but I think they both look brilliant. Lindsay looks charmingly waifish like Pippi Longstocking grown up and her friend is rocking the black and red in a way that's simultaneously retro and current -and smoking hot. Kudos to both.

jungle fever

When was the last time you saw such a full-on print? (Not counting that insipid Liberty floral at your local Target) It's like a Project Runway challenge to use the fabric for something other than a "Hawaiian Shirt." ...I do love that they're having fun and her draped skirt and pink booties are quite of the moment.

We ♥ the Brooklyn Flea

This has been an unusually mild autumn which brings everyone outdoors. I spent the afternon at the Brooklyn Flea - a great place to pick up additions for your wardrobe and admire the style of other flea market aficianados. I love how this girl is mixing patterns and the sort of mod feel to her hair and headband. The Marc Jacobs bag is nice too!

Andrew Andrew

Andrew + Andrew take the concept of matching outfits to dizzying new heights. Gimicky? Perhaps. Effective? Absolutely. This downtown dj-ing duo were delightful at the Betsey Johnson Gala. (although I'm not sure why this seems to be brought to you by the letter D today...)

I'm not sure what I think of this...but it definitely caught my eye and she owns this look.

I'm not going to lie. I think the cut of her skirt resembles a lampshade. However there was also a straightforward sort of attitude she had that I found appealing. Does it translate to a photo? This, I'm not sure...still thought I'd share it and see if anyone has an opinion.

Plaid harem pants. Kinda like wearing pajama pants during the day, only better. But you better commit to the look like this guy to get away with it...or risk getting committed..

Post Smeilinener Show

I met one of the designers of Smeilinener after the show with some friends. Love or hate the bold colors and pattern-on-pattern, it definitely has whimsy and humor - something that was lacking in the seriousness of many of the collections.

All else pales next to Hiro-Tha-Jap. DJ. Designer. Renegade. He is indeed Stupid Fresh. You can find him all over town and specifically this Thursday at Drop it Low. The party hosted by NYC's only Contessa and her friends at The ANNEX. See you there...

Feature Designer: Cody of Priestess NYC

I recently met Cody Ross at the Paper Magazine Party. Hailing from Dallas, Texas, of all places, Cody is the creative director of Priestess NYC. With his infectious energy and complete lack of pretension he had me charmed in under a minute. When I stopped by his atelier later that week I was equally charmed by his designs.
What better to wear in this weather than this Mickey Mouse print jumpsuit? An easy way to combine sex and humor.

I love all things silver. And I love motorcycle jackets. Seriously, what could be better?


He produces styles like this gold silk blouse that incorporate urban-girl cool with a contemporary take on ‘vintage punk. Inspired by abstract art and mathematics as well, his clothing reflect his intelligent, fun and unique perspective.
